Data Backup

Data Backup

It is crucial that you have a data backup of your important files and information in the event of something like a hard disk crash.  A lot of people do not give much thought to backing up the files on their computer and will carry on thinking that nothing is going to happen.  However, the truth of the matter is that your system can crash without notice and you could also find that your computer gets infected by malware or a virus which could wipe out information that you really need.  This is a nightmare situation and while it is rare to lose all of your files, it can happen.  Not having a data backup would be a complete disaster.

If this has given you a scare or if you have already had this happen to you then you need to start thinking about a plan for your data backup.  You need to take your backup requirements into consideration when devising this plan.  If you are just using your computer for personal use then you may have completely different backup requirements to someone who uses their computer for business.  The following are a few tips that might help in terms of PC data backup.

  • It is advisable to have a data backup in three different places.  Just backing up in one location is a recipe for disaster as you just never know what might happen.  For example, what if you backup your files to an external hard drive that is located in the same room as your computer and there is a fire in that room?  This would mean that most of your files would be irretrievable.  But if you had also backed up elsewhere such as online, then you would never have a problem getting your hands on your data.
  • Online data backup is probably the most convenient way to back up your files.  It is also easy to do and you will find that you probably get a lot more space when you backup online.  There are a number of backup services online which will allow you to backup your files to a remote server which should mean that you never lose them.  If you have your files backed up online, then you should be able to access them no matter where you are.
  • If you do decide to back up your files to an external storage device such as an external hard drive, CD, DVD or memory stick, then you should make sure this device is stored in a safe place away from your computer.  For example, if you are backing up business files then maybe you should take the external device home with you or have it in a different building in a fireproof safe.
  • Get into the habit of doing a data backup every week or every night.  If it is essential that you have up to date files then you will have to do this daily.  However it is very important to get into a routine so that you don’t start to neglect this important task.  Put it on your to-do list every evening.

Losing your data could be disastrous but if you perform a data backup on a regular basis you need never be caught out.
